Consolidation is coming: Is your organization ready?
Deciding to put an addition on your home can be very exciting. Perhaps you’ll finally have a garage or a larger master bedroom — or maybe even a second floor. But the larger the addition, the more complicated it gets. You have to consider how to integrate the new space with your existing home, and you also need to make sure you don’t take down a load-bearing wall or wreck the plumbing in the process.
 
This is a pretty accurate depiction of what it’s been like in the healthcare industry as providers build bigger and bigger “homes” by consolidating, merging or otherwise forming collaborative partnerships.

When Change Brings Opportunity: A Merge Cardio Case Study
The 2013 merger between Edward Hospital & Health Services and Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare created one of the largest health systems in Illinois. As is often the case with this type of amalgamation, executives of the newly named Edward-Elmhurst Healthcare faced numerous integration challenges and had to determine the best way to maximize each organization's strengths. Is the human heart more than just a pump?
In the blink of an eye, I can look back on a 40 year career in the amazing (and sometimes crazy) world of cardiology. As a clinician, I've seen many remarkable changes in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Over the years I've learned a lot and had the honor to work alongside some of the most brilliant minds in the field. It has been an unbelievable journey and I am thankful for it every day.

Cardiology in the era of consolidation
It’s no secret that consolidation is a growing trend in healthcare industry. Since the Affordable Care Act was enacted in 2010, mergers and acquisitions have ballooned, and according to a report by Irving Levin Associates, such activity increased by 14% in 2015, totaling 1,498 transactions – a new record for deal volume in M&A.
