Imaging Trends Uncovered: Enterprise Imaging v. Advanced Interoperability
The new series, “Imaging Trends Uncovered,” will dive into some of the high-level definitions of key words and phrases—simply from an educational perspective—that may be helpful to your medical imaging practice. Have a topic that you’d like to see us explore? Comment below and share with us some of the imaging trends you’d like uncovered.

When it comes to improving interoperability, health systems have been leveraging enterprise-wide imaging strategies for some time. But smart providers aren’t stopping there. A growing number of healthcare executives are focusing on advanced interoperability solutions for a more competitive advantage.

So what exactly is enterprise imaging, and how does it compare to advanced interoperability? We’ve referenced these topics in previous blog posts, but let’s quickly break it down and define what these really mean:

  • Enterprise imaging, at a high level, is a key strategy that enables providers to manage, store and share images and other clinical data easily within the same healthcare facility or system to get the “the right image to the right place at the right time”. By connecting the dots across the care continuum, providers can provide faster diagnoses and treatments, reduce duplicative imaging efforts and improve overall patient care.

  • Advanced interoperability, on the other hand, extends the reach of primary interactions between physicians and imaging providers with secondary or follow-up interactions among the doctor, the medical imaging provider and other outside specialists who would benefit from having access to the images and their corresponding reports. This not only includes those physicians that are within the four walls of an enterprise; it also extends at a larger scale reaching those external providers that are across the entire community. By moving beyond the four walls, benefits such as expanded referral business, increased cost savings and improved population health management can be realized.

In a healthcare environment of shrinking reimbursements and tightening regulatory demands, the ability to leverage an enterprise-wide imaging strategy and advanced interoperability can extend any providers reach into the community and make a greater impact on the bigger healthcare picture.
