At a trade show last month, a customer approached me and said, "I was just bragging about you! Remember that dinner a few years ago in Colorado?"  She went on to tell me that her business had acted on an idea we discussed that night, and that it brought over a million dollars of revenue into the practice. In addition, another person at the dinner collaborated with her on the same idea, which brought new revenue to both practices.

That "dinner" was an informal event Merge held to connect with clients and take a break from the intensity of the conference. I was fortunate to be sitting with customers from across the country, including those mentioned above.

Our conversation turned to some of the sessions we had attended that day, including one on a new government program that sounded intriguing but very challenging. We started tossing around ideas like "Well, we could get that data by..." and "I think you could automate that part of it through..."

As the evening progressed, we became increasingly detailed about the data interoperability solutions at hand. And the two customers, having met each other for the first time at that dinner, started talking about collaborating to help get the program implemented. Although we likely bored all the non-HIT folks at the table, we left with a sense that maybe this program could be tackled.

“Every time I am able to sit with our customers to discuss issues and ideas, I walk away more educated about the practical realities, more cognizant of the potential paths to success, and always grateful for the chance to use their feedback to build better products.”

Looking back, the dinner really epitomizes the value of connecting smart people in order to build better solutions.  Every time I am able to sit with our customers to discuss issues and ideas, I walk away more educated about the practical realities, more cognizant of the potential paths to success, and always grateful for the chance to use their feedback to build better products. I believe we have some of the brightest minds in healthcare IT using our products, and creating connections among them is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.

And when that collaboration leads to millions in revenue for their practices, that's a bonus for everyone!

While face-to-face discussions aren't always practical, online collaborations can be just as effective for building business relationships and nurturing new ideas. We encourage all of our customers to log on to Merge Communities to join the conversation.
