When meeting with customers during SIIM 2017
in Pittsburgh last week I was often asked, "What are your long-term plans for Watson Health Imaging?" and "How is Merge positioned to support the integration of mobile technology at my organization?" I wasn't surprised that the future of healthcare was on everyone's mind, especially since the theme of SIIM 2017 was Bridging the Transformation to a New Era in Healthcare
. If you stopped by the Merge booth, you saw that in many ways, the future is already here. Here are a few highlights:
Imaging Chief Medical Officer, Murray Reicher, M.D., participated in a panel discussion on Saturday, June 3, titled, "The Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Future of Medical Imaging – What Do Vendors Think?" When he wasn't busy talking about the role of cognitive computing in healthcare, Dr. Reicher took time to share his insights on how Merge's interoperability solutions
play a significant role in healthcare economics and improve patient encounters.
Patients undergo imaging procedures in multiple locations and their images need to follow them to the point of care so they'll be readily available to the referring physician. Providing this flexibility requires a tool like Merge's iConnect® Access
, which enables a physician to view - as well as share - images. Throughout SIIM, iConnect Access demonstrations showed booth visitors how easy it can be to access and share DICOM and non-DICOM images in order to create better patient experiences.
Booth visitors were intrigued by demonstrations of works in progress uniting IBM Watson Health and Merge technologies. Among the highlights was a cognitive data review tool that enables reconciliation of discrepancies between patients' clinical diagnoses and administrative records to help hospitals create more complete and accurate patient records.
"The present is big with the future," observed author Rudyard Kipling. The novelist was not referring to 21st century diagnostic imaging, however, the insight certainly applies. At SIIM 2017, hundreds of healthcare professionals and executives came together to transform health and healthcare through IT. As an unprecedented force in medical imaging informatics, Merge and IBM Watson Health
are excited to be working together at the forefront of this transformation, changing the role of imaging to improve patient outcomes across the continuum of care.
