Reap the rewards of the new healthcare era with an enterprise imaging strategy
If it’s true that a picture is worth a thousand words, then medical images are priceless in the swiftly approaching era of value-based healthcare. As Meaningful Use and other regulatory measures take effect, smart providers should be taking steps now, if they haven’t already begun doing so, to implement an enterprise-wide strategy that prioritizes image management.
Such a strategy starts by taking inventory of your healthcare system to determine where and how clinical images are currently being stored and managed. Next, knock down the walls of far-flung storage compartments and begin storing all images, regardless of specialty or modality, in one central location. Take it one step further by storing data either in the cloud or in a vendor-neutral archive (VNA). Make all these images available through individual EHRs so they can be accessed right at the point of care, and finally, connect them to the appropriate care delivery networks.
Neglecting to include imaging in an overall enterprise strategy is a mistake. Besides improving collaborative care capabilities, including imaging in an enterprise strategy can reduce costs associated with duplicate testing, resulting in more accurate diagnoses and faster, safer treatment plans. Patients are also less likely to be exposed to unnecessary radiation, and providers have the best chance to reap the highest rewards in the approaching new era of healthcare.
But that’s not to say it will be easy. In fact, these are only some of the benefits with respect to how and why it’s imperative for healthcare organizations to implement a comprehensive image management strategy that goes across the entire continuum of care.
