Dan Mollura, M.D., earned the admiration of hundreds of attendees at Merge Live last week. As the closing keynote speaker at Merge’s annual client conference, Mollura spoke of his journey from Wall Street analyst to radiologist to non-profit founder, detailing the creation and incredible impact of RAD-AID, the charitable organization he formed to help bring radiology and imaging technology to developing and impoverish countries around the globe.

We at Merge Healthcare share Mollura’s desire to make medical imaging more accessible worldwide, and partnered with his organization in 2015 to form the RAD-AID Merge International Imaging Informatics Initiative (RMI4). And just a few weeks ago, our parent company, IBM, announced that RAD-AID will be one of the first five recipients of the IBM Health Corps grant – funding that will provide them invaluable pro-bono consulting from some of the company’s brightest minds.

However, RAD-AID is clearly on a roll, announcing another partnership yesterday, this time with Straightline Aviation. Using Lockheed Martin’s Hybrid Airship, they will deliver advanced radiology health services, diagnostic medical imaging equipment and medical assistance to populations that are medically underserved, remote, or difficult to access due to poor transportation infrastructure. The initiative is set to launch in 2018/19.

“The hybrid represents a new era for 21st century global health outreach, enabling medical personnel and advanced technologies to reach marginalized populations that are separated from conventional infrastructure,” said Mollura.
