Merge Technologies Releases New Versions of MergeView™ and ImageChannel™. Solutions deliver lossless full-fidelity images throughout the enterprise using JPEG2000 wavelet technology and eFilm's latest diagnostic image workstation.
Milwaukee, WI, May 13, 2002

Merge Technologies Incorporated (Nasdaq: MRGE) today announced the release of MergeView version 1.1, designed to provide improved speed and functionality for enterprise-wide image distribution to clinicians inside and outside of radiology. MergeView incorporates an enhanced version of Merge's ImageChannel, a wavelet image streaming application, and eFilm Workstation™ 1.8, the newest release of a globally recognized standard for diagnostic image viewing which is used by more than 20,000 clinicians worldwide.

MergeView streams diagnostic quality images "on-demand" to clinicians across a Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN) and typical teleradiology connections such as cable modem, ISDN and DSL. MergeView uses ImageChannel, which now incorporates lossless JPEG2000 wavelet compression technology, to provide full-fidelity images with delivery speed and image quality that obviate the need for traditional PACS workstations and burdensome auto-routing protocols. With MergeView, images can be quickly retrieved within seconds of their completion from virtually any remote desktop computer, thus allowing the user to determine the most convenient time and place to view the images. MergeView and Image Channel are components of Merge's modular PACSbuilder solution.

"The implementation of Merge's PACSbuilder solution, specifically their MergeView system, went extremely smoothly, exceeding our expectations in our ability to maintain our workflow," said Arnold Friedman, MD, Chief of Radiology at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, Jacksonville, Florida. "MergeView, along with the full complement of Merge workflow solutions, allowed us to go filmless more quickly than alternative products would have permitted, supporting physician collaboration throughout our hospital and clinics."

Dr. Leonard Zawodniak, Chief of Radiology of Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, New Jersey, commented on the speed with which the MergeView 1.1 images are served. "The speed of delivery and quality of images allows radiologists and referring physicians to spend less time locating images and more time focusing on clinical care," said Dr. Zawadniak. "MergeView 1.1 reduces the logistical challenge of distributing images to radiologists and other clinicians, especially those located remotely."

Dr. Frank Parks, a radiologist from Methodist Radiological Professional Corporation, who practices at Methodist Healthcare - University Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, served as a lead clinician in clinical trials of MergeView 1.1. "The delivery speed and image quality is very appropriate for a teleradiology solution for referring physicians," said Dr. Parks. "Merge understands the technical and clinical needs of the users in the workflow process, and that is clearly reflected in this version of MergeView," said Dr. Parks.

"For more than 15 years our customers have trusted our connectivity and workflow integration abilities. The recognition of our design and engineering domain knowledge in MergeView's image transmission capabilities and other PACSbuilder workflow technologies is very rewarding," said Richard Linden, Merge Technologies' President and CEO. "With the guidance of our customers, we will continue to develop solutions that reflect a deep understanding of each individual's role in the workflow process, and provide cost-effective solutions to enhance that workflow."
